The Devil’s Mother

I’m going to meet the Devil’s mother. I didn’t even realise the Devil had a mother, or that he even could. I just thought he was here whenever Hell was created, that he sprung up from a lava pit and was like - I’m here bitches and I rule this fucking place now. But no, he has a mother, and I’m about to meet her.

What is this life I’m living now?

He led us outside the castle, onto a balcony, and called forth bright red bat wings that sprung out from his back to fly us over Hell. I get a good look at the place, seeing creatures and monsters dotted around huts, caves, and other contraptions he tells me are homes, housing monsters in ways that fit their needs. All the land is still dead, it’s still hot as balls wherever we go, but that might be due to the hundred volcanos I see along the way, plus the rivers of lava.

The Devil hasn’t spoken the whole time, his face carved in anger, the dancing flames back in his eyes, and his whole body rigid, carrying me bridal style.

“Sooooo, you have a mother?” I ask, knowing he doesn’t want to talk about it but dying to know all the details.

He takes his eyes off the sky in front of us to look at me instead. There’s a constipated look on his face, and a twitch in his neck.

“I have a creator,” he corrects, making me frown. “Who would always insist on us calling her mother.”

Huh?

Now I’m even more confused. I thought for a moment, he had a real-life mum who gave birth to and raised him, but creator doesn’t sound like that.

“You have heard of Lillith?” he asks, bringing us down onto the ground, keeping me in his arms.

“The mother of monsters,” I whisper, and it clicks into place.

“Correct,” the Devil grunts, walking us to a stone building with magic pulsing around it. “The Horsemen and I were her first creations. She created me to have a family with a fallen angel who ended up breaking her heart. She killed him and ate his heart as punishment.”

Damn, that’s some vicious shit. It’s also pretty badass, but I’m not going to tell him that.

“She then created the Horsemen to cause destruction in her pain and grief. She built us to bring pain, to wreak havoc on the earthly plane, a place monsters can thrive almost as much as we can in Hell. We were her champions, her vengeance, and we cared for her as much as soulless monsters can care.”

He casts his hand over the magical boundary, creating a hole for us to pass through. The door to the stone building opens before we reach it, and he takes us inside.

“After thousands of years of creating monsters, letting us take what we wanted freely, she grew weak. She started to care for the humans we hurt, sympathised with their plight. She bound us here in Hell, and we only manage to leave this place thanks to loopholes in her magic.
